The wine region of Cairanne
Southern Rhône cru promoted in 2016 (Vaucluse): Grenache signature king red (≥50%) with Syrah and Mourvèdre — deep robe with notes of black cherry, blackberry, raspberry, garrigue, liquorice, spice and peppery touch, elegant tannic structure and long finish, 5-15 year ageing. Racy whites from Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Bourboulenc (white fruits, flowers, honey). AOC (2016), ~1,088 ha on 3 terroirs, mandatory hand harvest, Mediterranean climate.
The wine region of Rhone Valley
France's 2nd-largest AOC vineyard, two complementary worlds. Northern: pure Syrah in signature reds (Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas), deep and peppery with blackberry, violet, black olive and smoked bacon notes, exceptional ageing. Opulent Viognier whites (Condrieu, apricot, flowers) and ample Marsanne-Roussanne. Southern: sun-soaked Grenache blends at Châteauneuf, Gigondas, Vacqueyras (candied fruit, garrigue).
The word of the wine: Powdery mildew
Disease of the vine due to a fungus. Less dreadful than mildew, it only attacks the surface of the green parts. Sulphur has long been the best remedy.
