Discover the grape variety: Sérénèze de Voreppe

A very old grape variety that was once grown in the Grésivaudan region, and more generally in the Isère Valley from Grenoble to Tullins. It could also be found in Savoie and in the northern part of the Drôme. It should be noted that it was confused for a long time - even today - with the ciréné de Romans with which it shares many synonyms including sérenèze. According to Thierry Lacombe (I.N.R.A./Montpellier), it is the result of a natural intraspecific cross between the white gouais and the chatus. Sérénèze de Voreppe is registered in the Official Catalogue of wine grape varieties, list A1, under the name Sérénèze.

The wine region of South West

The South-West is a large territorial area of France, comprising the administrative regions of Aquitaine, Limousin and Midi-Pyrénées. However, as far as the French wine area is concerned, the South-West region is a little less clear-cut, as it excludes Bordeaux - a wine region so productive that it is de facto an area in its own right. The wines of the South West have a Long and eventful history. The local rivers play a key role, as they were the main trade routes to bring wines from traditional regions such as Cahors, Bergerac, Buzet and Gaillac to their markets.

Hugh Johnson: ‘Today it’s a palo cortado, a relatively elusive midfield player’

I’m busy, lazy or just tired… it’s half past twelve. I open the fridge and the same familiar labels smile up at me. The same with the repurposed coal hole under the front steps where the red wines live. I won’t tell you exactly what they are – although regular readers can have a pretty good guess. The ones that get mentioned least frequently are the ones that make an appearance on every routine day. When the soup (winter) or the salad (summer) comes out for a ‘working’ lunch, the bottle be ...

London’s first urban winery buys 12ha vineyard in West Sussex

Wine trade veteran Cliff Roberson opened London Cru in 2013, offering visitors the chance to see the winemaking process in action. The urban winery – which is sandwiched between Earl’s Court and Stamford Bridge stadium in London’s Zone 1 – has previously bought all of its grapes from various growers. That is generally the case for urban wineries, which source grapes from across the country or around the world and produce wines on-site. However, London Cru will now be able to control the quality ...

Extreme weather may cut Italy’s 2023 wine harvest: Forecast

Extreme weather events mean Italy’s 2023 wine harvest could be up to 14% smaller than in 2022, said national farming group Coldiretti today (3 August), in an initial forecast based on assessments of the situation across the country. It’s still early days and much depends on conditions in the coming weeks, said Coldiretti. Yet it said national production could be around 43 million hectolitres in 2023, compared to 50m hectolitres last year. If this proves accurate, 2023 would rank alongside 1948, ...

The word of the wine: Acidity

When present without excess, acidity contributes to the balance of the wine, giving it freshness and nervousness. But when it is very high, it becomes a defect, giving it a biting and green character. On the other hand, if it is insufficient, the wine is soft.
