The wine region of Alsace

Alsace, located in the extreme north-east of France, is Distinguished from other French wine regions by its strong Franco-Germanic influences. These influences are the result of a back-and-forth between the German and French sovereignties over the last few centuries. A method of making certain sparkling wines such as blanquette de Limoux, sparkling gaillac or clairette de Die, which consists of a second fermentation in the bottle based on natural sugars and yeasts naturally brought by the grapes (unlike the méthode champenoise, which requires the addition of tirage liquor).
