The wine region of Alsace Grand Cru 'Hatschbourg'
Grand Cru of Hattstatt and Voegtlinshoffen in Haut-Rhin (~47 ha, 210-330 m, south/southeast, deep draining marl-limestone soils rich in clay and pebbles). Gewurztraminer is the signature king (majority): dense and taut with exotic fruits, spices and flowers. Pinot Gris and Riesling as structured complements, subtle Muscat. Characteristic wines with generous sugars balanced by precise acidity, cellars 4-5 years.
The wine region of Alsace
Capital of great French aromatic whites, most often dry and single-varietal. Straight, mineral Riesling (lemon, gunflint), opulent, exuberant Gewurztraminer (lychee, rose, spices), round, smoky Pinot Gris, floral, crisp Muscat, supple Pinot Blanc. Fine, fruity Crémants d'Alsace, exceptional sweet Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles. 15,500 ha at the foot of the Vosges on varied soils, 51 Grands Crus since 1975.
The word of the wine: Sour
Said of a wine that is unpleasantly pungent and has a vinegar-like odour.
