The wine region of Fresno County

County in the San Joaquin Valley in central California (heart of the Central Valley producing 70% of California wine, deep fertile alluvial soils, very hot climate softened near the San Joaquin River, home of Fresno State): Syrah and Zinfandel as signature full-bodied reds — concentrated dark fruits with spicy-peppery notes. Sangiovese, Barbera and Tempranillo, opulent Viognier, and the high-altitude AVA Squaw Valley-Miramonte.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Climate

Term used in Burgundy to designate a locality. The most famous climats are subject to specific recognition and constitute the first growths.
