Discover the grape variety: Frankenthal
It is said to be of Austrian origin, from the Tyrol to be precise, and for some it comes from Franconia in Germany. Some ampelographers consider that Frankenthal and Kavcina crna or Zametovka grown in Slovenia are identical, with perhaps only a few clonal differences, which have yet to be confirmed, although it is true that they all have a large number of synonyms in common. Frankenthal can still be found in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Portugal, England, Chile and Australia. For a long time, it was cultivated under greenhouses as a table grape in the North, East and West of France. Today, it has been almost abandoned and is therefore in danger of disappearing.

Aldo Fiordelli: ‘The east-facing vineyard absorbs the morning’s first sunlight’
I’m fortunate enough to taste a fair amount of fine wine each year and I have come to the conclusion that each of us is forced to build our own stylistic preferences, regardless of the appellation or classification of a wine. Instead of simply choosing a bottle of Bordeaux over Barolo, for example, most of us probably aim to drink each on the right occasion and, in doing so, carve out our individual preferences for these wines. My personal bias – which I must confess, to be fair and transp ...

After the annual Greek wine fair Oenorama in March, I darted from Athens to Central Greece to the Valley of the Muses before swooping down to eastern Crete. The surging feeling of energy across the Greek wine scene is so potent right now that if you offered me a Greek passport I’d change my name to Giorgos in a heartbeat. From the front line of Greece’s deep-rooted vineyards, I bring my very own blueprint for the Ten Commandments of Greek Wine… 1. Old vines are big news From Mouhtaro in th ...
