Discover the grape variety: Blütenmuskateller

An interspecific cross, obtained in Russia in 1947, between Severnyj - a relative of Vitis amurensis - and Muscat à petits grains blancs, which is also said to have Muscat fleur d'oranger and Muscat d'Alexandrie. Note that it is resistant to mildew and powdery mildew, and that its wine, often produced as a sweet sparkling wine, is of the muscat type, though less pronounced than that obtained from the usual muscat grape varieties. Unknown in France, it can be found in Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Russia, Hungary, Ukraine and Australia.

The Rhône Valley continues to make considerably more red wine than white and rosé, but Pellaton explained that reweighting the split of different colours will be one of their principal policies. Their intention is to increase production of white wines with a view to doubling shipments between now and 2031. ‘Historically, Rhône Valley Vineyard ...

A couple of weeks ago, I was looking up at some terraced vineyards in St-Joseph with an Australian friend. He remarked that he’d never seen a steep vineyard like this in his home country. Who could afford to rip out the trees, build the access roads, construct the terraces, and plant the vines, without being certain beforehand that the resulting wine could be sold at prices high enough to recoup the investment? It might not be the most romantic way of looking at it. But that’s the modern reality ...

Walls: Tavel and its unexpected revolution

So, given that Tavel is, according to The Oxford Companion to Wine, ‘one of France’s few all-rosé appellations,’ my response might be unexpected. The Oxford Companion is technically correct, of course – the wines made here are paler than a typical red wine. But compared to other rosés, that’s where the comparison ...
