The wine region of Vin de France
Vin de France is the most basic level of quality for wines from France. These are generally uncomplicated everyday drinks - most often blends, but perhaps also Varietal wines based on a well-known Grape variety such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. Wines from France are those that do not meet the criteria stipulated by the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) laws (see information on French wine labels). The word of the wine: Chaptalization
The addition of sugar at the time of fermentation of the must, an ancient practice, but theorized by Jean-Antoine Chaptal at the dawn of the 19th century. The sugar is transformed into alcohol and allows the natural degree of the wine to be raised in a weak or cold year, or - more questionably - when the winegrower has a harvest that is too large to obtain good maturity.
