Discovering the wine region of Fleurieu

Fleurieu is a wine zone located South of Adelaide, the administrative capital of South Australia, which takes its name from the French explorer Charles Pierre Claret de Fleurieu. Across the zone Shiraz is the most common Grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are among the supporting cast. Five wine regions can be found within its boundaries: Currency Creek (to the west of Lake Alexandrina), Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek (between Lake Alexandrina and the town of Strathalbyn), McLaren Vale (in the northwest of the peninsula) and Southern Fleurieu (located on the peninsula and a section of the Mount Lofty Ranges). Overall, the Climate of Fleurieu is heavily affected by its proximity to the sea, producing a predominantly Mediterranean influence.

The seasons are characterized by milder temperatures than those experienced in some of South Australia's inland and high-altitude regions. The five regions within the zone have variable mesoclimates, dictated by their elevation and proximity to the coast. These conditions combine to make the peninsula an area which can support a variety of grape types.

Discover the grape variety: Colombaud

The colombaud grape variety is equally appreciated as a white table grape and as a wine grape. Originally from Provence, it is practically no longer found in the vineyards. It is known under several other names, including poupousaoumo, courambaou and bouteillan. An amber veil covers them on the sides most exposed to the sun. The thin, crumbly greenish skin protects an ellipsoidal or spherical pulp, juicy and firm in consistency. The pulp has a simple, pleasant and slightly spicy taste. The berries are gathered in bunches carried by strong peduncles. The grapes are of medium length, compact and cylindrical-conical in shape, often with fins, and are harvested at the third medium period, as the grapevine buds late. Short pruning is best suited to this semi-erect plant, which likes exposed, warm soil.

Pomerol granted permission for ‘exceptional’ irrigation

‘Climatic conditions’ and the requests of a ‘certain number of winegrowers’ were cited as the reasons for Jean-Marie Garde, president of the Pomerol appellation, to ask regulatory body Institut National de l’Origine et de la Qualité (INAO) to temporarily reverse the long-standing ban on irrigation. The favourable news was shared via emails seen by Decanter, with an accompanying letter from the INAO dated July 20, 2022. The letter, translated from French, states that after ...

Walls’ hidden gems: Domaine Font de Courtedune, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Establishing a vineyard isn’t something you just rush into these days. Identifying the right site, carrying out soil analysis, selecting suitable rootstocks and varieties, procuring equipment… We’ve made a lot of progress in the past 80 years. But perhaps we overthink such things. Some estates, such as Domaine Font de Courtedune, have grown organically, with major decisions often being made for practical, rather than stylistic, reasons. And the results, from Côtes-du-Rhône to Châteauneuf-du-Pape ...
