A simple, early-ripening profile. Widely grown in Japan (Yamanashi, Nagano), it is the emblem of modern Japanese reds. Black hybrid grape created in 1927 by Zenbei Kawakami, a Bailey × Muscat Hamburg cross.

Sierra Foothills AVA (Amador, El Dorado, 1983, 1,000-2,000 ft): signature Zinfandel as ruling red (old vines including Grandpère Vineyard 1866, America's oldest) — full-bodied and concentrated with intense blackberry, black cherry, bramble, spice and earthy notes, old vines adding dried fruits, pepper and leather, high alcohol balanced by acidity. Primitivo and Barbera complement. Mediterranean climate, 30°C diurnal range, weathered granites.
