L'IGP Codru est une appellation viticole qui couvre approximativement le tiers Central de la République de Moldavie, s'étendant de la frontière avec la Roumanie à celle avec l'Ukraine de l'autre côté du pays. La région est surtout associée à des vins blancs et mousseux de grande qualité. Les raisins blancs représentent environ 63 % des plantations. Les principales variétés blanches sont (dans l'ordre des surfaces plantées) le Chardonnay, le Riesling, le Sauvignon Blanc, l'Aligoté, le Muscat Ottonel, le Rkatsiteli et le Feteasca Alba.

Les principaux vins rouges sont le Cabernet Sauvignon, le Merlot et le Pinot Noir. Le climat est continental tempéré, avec des hivers doux et courts et des étés longs et chauds. Les précipitations annuelles moyennes sont de 450 à 550 mm (17,7 à 21,7 pouces), contre 310 à 320 jours d'ensoleillement. L'altitude des vignobles varie de 150 à 400 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer.

La région est fragmentée par un réseau de vallées, de ravins, de crêtes, de collines et de falaises, bien qu'environ 80 % se trouve sur des pentes de 1 à 10°. Les sols les plus courants sont le tchernoziom foncé. Il est très fertile, avec des niveaux élevés d'humus, d'acides phosphoriques, de phosphore et d'ammoniac. Il peut donner des rendements élevés grâce à sa capacité de stockage de l'eau.
