Discovering the wine region of Rose Valley

Danubian Plains is a wine region covering a large Part of northern Bulgaria. It is one of just two PGI wine designations in the country permitted by the EU for export to Union members. The other is Thracian Lowlands. The two PGIs were introduced in 2007 as Bulgaria became a member of the EU.

Together they account for around 30 percent of the country's wine output. There are also 52 smaller PDOs (equivalent to a French AOP) but only a small fraction are used with any regularity. However a wide number of traditional (pre 2007) subregions remain in use by producers. A varied selection of Grape varieties are cultivated acroos the Danubian Plains region, for still and Sparkling wines.

The native red grape varieties Pamid and Gamza (Kadarka) are widely planted, along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The principal white varieties include Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel and Traminer. The latter might mean Savagnin Blanc or its Aromatic pink-berried version, Gewürztraminer. The PGI zone covers the Central part of the Danube plain on the southern bank of the river.

Despite this length of time, part of their introduction has clearly been spurned by the recent wine fraud case wherein hundreds of thousands of their (and other locals DO’s) bac ...

Walls: Tavel and its unexpected revolution

When asked which is the most exciting appellation in the Rhône, there’s one that currently springs to mind before all others: Tavel. I have to be honest with you: I don’t buy much rosé. So, given that Tavel is, according to The Oxford Companion to Wine, ‘one of France’s few all-rosé appellations,’ my response might be unexpected. The Oxford Companion is technically correct, of course – the wines made here are paler than a typical red wine. But compared to other rosés, that’s where the comparison ...

Penfolds doubles production capacity in France following Château Lanessan acquisition

The deal includes 390ha of land in the Haut-Médoc appellation, of which 80ha is currently planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, along with the winery. It will allow TWE’s flagship brand, Penfolds, to increase its focus on creating blends featuring grapes from Bordeaux and Barossa. Earlier this year, chief winemaker Peter Gago unveiled Penfolds II, a Cabernet-Shiraz-Merlot blend created in partnership with Dourthe Bordeaux. The wine featured 71% grapes grown in Bordeaux and 29 ...
