It is believed to have originated in Hungary, in the region bordering Romania, from where it spread to Germany, Alsace and the southwest of France, particularly in the Gers and high Pyrenees departments. It is also found in the United States (California). Basilicata, in Southern Italy, is a region whose name rarely appears in wine circles. It is best known for its red wines made from the Aglianico grape, and in particular for the Aglianico del Vulture appellation. It has only four DOCs, which collectively cover only two of every 100 bottles produced here. The remaining 98% is sold under IGT or, more likely, Vino da Tavola.
