Discover the grape variety: Regent

A complex interspecific cross between the diana (sylvaner x Müller-Thurgau) and the chambourcin obtained in Germany in 1967 by Gerhardt Alleweldt. It can be found in Quebec (Canada), Belgium and Switzerland, but is little known in France. It should be noted that Regent, a monogenic variety, which is nevertheless resistant to certain cryptogamic diseases, was "bypassed" in 2010 by a less resistant strain of mildew, which was also the case for bianca.

The wine region of Australie du Sud

SouthAustralia is one of Australia's six states, located (as the name suggests) in the south of the vast island continent. It's the engine room of the Australian wine industry, responsible for about half of the country's total production each year. But there's more to the region than quantity - countless high-quality wines are produced here, most from the region's signature Grape, Shiraz. These include such fine, collectible wines as Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace, Torbreck The Laird and d'Arenberg The Dead Arm.

We launched the Decanter 360 Academy to help increase diversity and inclusivity within the wine trade. DWWA judge Mags Janjo of BAME Wine Professionals urged Annona to apply after she expressed a desire to work in the industry. ‘I searched Google to see if there were any Black British owned wine companies, and unfortunately the results weren’t very high yielding,’ she said. ‘I love wine and wondered if I could be a part of the industry.’ She was inspired by the McBride sisters – who launched the ...

Andrew Jefford: ‘Is there any duty on fine-wine producers to “be accessible” in some way?’

In the last 20 years, that landscape has changed. The finest wines are now luxury goods: tokens of exclusivity. Exclusivity means exclusion. The high peaks are sealed off by fencing; only extraordinary wealth will get you through the gates. What used to be said of yachts (to move our metaphor offshore) is now true of grand cru Burgundy or luxury Champagne. If you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it. Is there any duty on fine-wine producers to ‘be accessible’ in some way or other? ...

Ireland’s plans for cancer warnings on alcohol labels draw formal complaint

Dublin wants all alcoholic drinks labels to carry warnings similar to those on cigarette packets, highlighting the risks of liver disease and developing fatal cancers. This has been met with a fierce backlash from fellow EU member states, especially those that export large volumes of wine across the bloc. Italy, whose wine industry is worth around €14 billion per year and employs roughly 1.3 million people, has spearheaded the protests. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the Irish plan an ‘a ...
