The wine region of Alsace Grand Cru 'Hengst'
Grand Cru of Wintzenheim near Colmar (~76 ha, 270–370 m, full south/south-east slope, Oligocene marl-limestone and conglomerate sandstone, dry and warm microclimate): signature Gewurztraminer — powerful, wild in youth, smoky and spicy, evolving nobly with age — and structured Riesling with intense minerality and persistent ripe vivacity. Weißburgunder as complement. Vineyard cited since the 9th century, high alcohol, exceptional complexity and ageing potential.
The wine region of Alsace
Capital of great French aromatic whites, most often dry and single-varietal. Straight, mineral Riesling (lemon, gunflint), opulent, exuberant Gewurztraminer (lychee, rose, spices), round, smoky Pinot Gris, floral, crisp Muscat, supple Pinot Blanc. Fine, fruity Crémants d'Alsace, exceptional sweet Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles. 15,500 ha at the foot of the Vosges on varied soils, 51 Grands Crus since 1975.
The word of the wine: Water stress
Lack of water. Water stress blocks the vegetative cycle of the vine, which uses all available resources to maintain the integrity of the plant, thus blocking the ripening process of the grapes.
