The wine region of Champagne Grand Cru 'Le Mesnil-sur-Oger'
Grand Cru village at the heart of the Côte des Blancs (Champagne), considered the finest of Chardonnay villages: exclusive signature Chardonnay as Blanc de Blancs king — signature balance and ageing potential with notes of white flowers, stone fruits, fresh croissant and a touch of almond, long chalky mineral finish and elegant energy. Signature draining chalk soils on Cretaceous limestone, east exposure capturing morning sun, min 3 years ageing, home of Salon and Krug.
The wine region of Champagne
World benchmark sparkling wines: fine bubbles, citrusy tension, notes of brioche, toasted almond, white flowers and white-fleshed fruits after ageing on lees. Three grapes blended or solo: fleshy Pinot Noir (38%), fruity Meunier (33%), chiselled Chardonnay (28%). From straight Blanc de Blancs to vinous Blanc de Noirs, from non-vintage Brut to age-worthy Millésimé. AOC since 1927, 34,300 ha on chalk, 17 Grands Crus and 44 Premiers Crus.
The word of the wine: Pinot meunier
Cultivated in the 19th century in all the northern vineyards, this black grape variety has largely regressed since. Very present in the Marne valley, it constitutes a third of the vineyards in Champagne, alongside pinot noir and chardonnay with which it is often blended. It brings roundness and red and yellow fruit aromas to champagnes. Pinot meunier is also the dominant grape variety in red and rosé wines in the Orleans AOC and the rare Touraine-Noble-Joué, a grey wine. Syn.: meunier.
