The wine region of Alsace Grand Cru 'Sporen'
Grand Cru of Riquewihr in the Haut-Rhin (~24 ha in a south-east-facing amphitheatre at 275 m, clay-marl soils decalcified on the surface, very rich in phosphoric acid which promotes early ripening). Gewurztraminer is the white king: full-bodied, rich and luscious with exotic fruits and spices, balanced by aromatic herbs and fine acidity. Pinot Gris is a distinguished complement. Finesse, distinction, elegance and richness—a terroir cited as early as 1432 by the Dukes of Württemberg.
The wine region of Alsace
Capital of great French aromatic whites, most often dry and single-varietal. Straight, mineral Riesling (lemon, gunflint), opulent, exuberant Gewurztraminer (lychee, rose, spices), round, smoky Pinot Gris, floral, crisp Muscat, supple Pinot Blanc. Fine, fruity Crémants d'Alsace, exceptional sweet Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles. 15,500 ha at the foot of the Vosges on varied soils, 51 Grands Crus since 1975.
The word of the wine: Astringent
Said of a wine that is a bit harsh and rough on the palate. Astringency often appears in young red wines that are rich in tannins and need to be rounded out.
