Discover the grape variety: Courbu

Courbu is indigenous to the Pyrenean vineyards. This white grape variety is part of the Jurançon family. Three clones are recognized in this variety, which buds in the medium term, develops regularly and has satisfactory productivity. The way in which the shoots form is characteristic. Initially upright, they bend and curve, giving a parasol-like finish to the vine. A vigorous rootstock is recommended to see the Courbu develop and mature at a late age. The small clusters display quite distinctive features. Not necessarily winged, they are pignate and stocky, with a rounded or rather flattened shape. A light pink veil covers the most mature berries, but the original colour varies from yellow-green to golden white. Vinification enhances the juice of this variety. The bouquet becomes more refined with age under a pale yellow colour. Dry or sweet, this wine is always remarkably fine.

Walls’ hidden gems: Domaine La Ferme St-Martin, Beaumes de Venise

Onwards, upwards. The roads get narrower, the corners get tighter. I step out of the car when I finally reach the winery and the air is so much fresher here. I go to take a sip from my water bottle and a gust of wind makes it whistle. I stand with Thomas Jullien and we look over the vineyards. It’s not yet spring, and the vines look little more than sticks. ‘It’s a lunar landscape at the moment,’ he says, as a friend’s flock of 300 sheep has just passed through to graze on every scrap of green b ...

Walls’ hidden gems: Domaine A&E Verset, Cornas

Emmanuelle Verset is the sixth generation to make wine in her family, and represents the E in Domaine A&E Verset. The A is for Alain, her father. She took over from him in 2016 at the age of 24, and is one of the few female winemakers in Cornas. The Verset name runs deep in this part of the Rhône. You might have heard of Noël Verset (1919 – 2015), whose bottles are highly sought-after today – Noël was Alain’s uncle. Scroll down to see Matt Walls tasting notes and scores for six Domaine A& ...

Colombia for wine lovers

Think of Colombia, think of balmy evenings dancing to salsa, fuelled by shots of aguardiente and arepas. But there’s plenty more than the anise-based spirit and cornmeal cakes to sample in the South American country. Chefs have stepped up their game to put gastronomy on the map, with sommeliers and bartenders following suit. Not just appreciating local ingredients and distilling spirits, they also seek out wines from around the world to accompany fine-dining experiences. Their endeavours have pa ...
