According to genetic analyses carried out in Montpellier (Hérault), it is the result of a cross between the magdeleine noire des Charentes and the cabernet franc. The Côte de Nuits is the northern half of the Côte d'Or wine region in Burgundy (the Southern half being the Côte de Beaune).
