Discovering the wine region of Minho

Minho is Portugal's Northernmost wine region. It is known for one wine style above all others: crisp, light, white Vinho Verde, whose DOC zone covers the same territory. The Minho name is used for the area's Vinho Regional designation (similar to the French IGP). The latter's looser production laws allow more diversity in the average winery's portfolio, including red and rosé wines.

Minho VR was formerly known Rios do Minho before the Vinho Regional category was updated in 2008 to fall in line with the EU-wide PGI/IGP/IGT category. The region is located on the Portugal's Atlantic coast to the north and east of Porto, Portugal's second-largest city and the home of Port. It occupies a roughly rectangular area about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from north to South, which reaches about 50km (30 miles) inland. There are around 60,000 hectares of vines planted in Minho.

Many of these are dedicated to Vinho Verde, the country's largest DOC. Minho Grape Varieties A number of varieties are also found in Spains Rias Baixas region, which Lies immediately to the north. The key grape varieties to be found in white Minho wines include the natives Alvarinho, Avesso, Loureiro, Pederna (Arinto) and Trajadura. Walls’ hidden gems: Domaine La Ferme St-Martin, Beaumes de Venise

Onwards, upwards. The roads get narrower, the corners get tighter. I step out of the car when I finally reach the winery and the air is so much fresher here. I go to take a sip from my water bottle and a gust of wind makes it whistle. I stand with Thomas Jullien and we look over the vineyards. It’s not yet spring, and the vines look little more than sticks. ‘It’s a lunar landscape at the moment,’ he says, as a friend’s flock of 300 sheep has just passed through to graze on every scrap of green b ...

World wine production in 2021 is set to fall by 4% versus last year, to around 250 million hectolitres (mhl), equal to 25bn litres and close to the historic low witnessed in 2017, the International Organisation for Vine & Wine (OIV) has estimated. Its figures are preliminary, but they highlight the ‘severe impact’ of ‘adverse climatic conditions’ on the 2021 vintage in parts of Europe, said OIV director-general Paul Roca during a virtual press conference. California sustainability: latest developments and innovations

In the produce aisle of most US supermarkets, choices are clear: the organic section is to the right, or at the very least, organic items are identified on packaging or shelf-talkers. Shoppers willing to pay a few cents more per pound for broccoli grown without synthetic chemicals know where to reach. In the wine aisle? Not so much. There’s more than a bit of confusion, to date at least, with little-understood labels announcing wines are certified sustainable or made from organic grapes. Scroll ...
