Discover the grape variety: Verdejo

An ancient grape variety that has been cultivated for a long time, mainly in the Rueda region of northwestern Spain. D.N.A. tests show that it is the result of a natural cross between Savagnin and Castellana Blanco. It should not be confused with the Verdelho, which is very well known in Portugal, and the Verdelho Branco, which is almost more widespread. The Verdejo is registered in the Official Catalogue of wine grape varieties list A. It can also be found in the United States (Virginia, California, etc.), Australia, Portugal, etc., but is practically unknown in France.

Napa Valley Grapegrowers to receive climate change funding

While vineyards are managed one vintage at a time, farming practices take a longer view. This grant will go a long way to help provide those resources. ‘Farmers are by nature risk averse,’ said Molly Williams of Napa Valley Grapegrowers. ‘Climate change poses considerable risks. We aren’t plantin ...

Vintage Crime: The darker side of wine

It was a spot of bedtime reading that did it. Desperately seeking a research topic to finish the Master of Wine course, a chapter in Don and Petie Kladstrup’s Champagne mentioned the 1911 riots: Champagne houses were razed by angry growers, the sabre-wielding French army charged down the streets of Epernay, and one of the biggest reasons for the discontent? Wine fraud. This was something I could get into. With my journalistic juices flowing, a scratch of the surface revealed a paucity of researc ...

Navigating the flames: British Columbia wineries’ response to the growing wildfire threat

As the summer season comes to a close and many wineries prepare for harvest, more than 400 active wildfires continue to burn in British Columbia, a handful of which the BC Wildfire Service designates ‘a potential threat to public safety’ in major cities, small towns and the vineyards in between. Sparked on 15th August, the season’s most destructive wildfire – the McDougall Creek Fire – had the province’s wine industry on its knees. Spreading over 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres), it initially thre ...

The word of the wine: Ovoids (tanks)
