Discovering the wine region of Weinland

Weinviertel DAC – whose name translates as "wine quarter" – is an appellation in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). It is by far the largest Districtus Austriae Controllatus wine region in Austria. It was also the first Austrian wine region to be given that title, in 2002, with a DAC Reserve designation added in 2009. The designation applies only to white wines from the Grüner Veltliner Grape variety.

There are around 6700 hectares planted to the variety in this zone, just under half the total of Weinviertel Vineyards. It is also about half the national (and therefore global) total for the grape variety. - Minimum 12 percent Alcohol by Volume vs 13 percent - Maximum 6 grams per liter residual sugar vs completely dry - No Botrytis or oak aromas allowed vs subtle botrytis or oak aromas allowed - Submission to Tasting commision from January 1 of year after harvest vs from March 15 Weinviertel is Austria's most important wine region in terms of both its area under vine and the quantity of wine it produces. With more than 13,800 hectares (34,100 acres) planted, its Vineyard area is 10 times that of Austria's most famous region, Wachau, and about the same as the entire state of Burgenland.

Outside of the DAC title, the region also produces fresh, citrusy white wines made from Riesling, and increasing quantities of bright, spicy red Zweigelt. However, non-DAC wines are labeled with the Niederösterreich designation. Zweigelt holds a distant (but steadily closer) second place in the DAC, outnumbered four to one by Grüner Veltliner. Third equal are Welschriesling and Blauer Portugieser – both as traditional as they are unfashionable, and both declining rapidly as they are replaced with more internationally popular varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and, particularly, Muscat.

Discover the grape variety: Zweigelt

Intraspecific crossing between the saint laurent and the limberger realized in 1922 and in Austria by Fritz Zweigelt (1888/1964) who named it rotburger. Very well known in Austria, it can be found in most Eastern countries, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, the United States, etc. In France, it is not very well known and yet this variety has interesting qualities when vinified as a single variety for both red and rosé wines. - Synonyms: rotburger, klosterneuburger, zweigelt blau, blauer-zweigelt in Germany, zweigeltrebe in Austria, Great Britain and the Czech Republic, blauer zwelgetrabe in Hungary, etc. (for all the synonyms of the grape varieties, click here !)

Wine lover: The climate needs you!

Kimberly Nicholas PhD (@KA_Nicholas) is a sustainability scientist at Lund University, and author of Under the Sky We Make: How to Be Human in a Warming World  Our 2020 research found that how fast we succeed at stopping warming will determine how much of the wine-growing regions and their characteristic varieties we love will remain in our lifetimes.  Changing to warmer-climate varieties can help limit losses, but there are limits to adaptation.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. ...

BBQ wines: Great bottles to drink with all your barbecue dishes

What kind of wine should you serve at a BBQ?  With the weather (hopefully) on our side, there are few things better than a barbecue in the sunshine accompanied by a delicious glass of wine. Choosing a good bottle for your barbecue can really elevate the occasion, although for something a little less formal, there’s plenty to choose from in terms of canned or bag-in-box wines instead. Forget those days of washing down a burnt burger with warm Chardonnay or a ‘cooked’ red served in a plastic ...

A perfect pairing: Flatbread and cod roe emulsion

My father worked in the wholesale supply of fruit and vegetables. He would often come home with a box of the day’s best produce, and so I became interested in what was in season. Both my parents often worked late, so cooking dinner to help take some weight off them inspired me to want to learn more. My first kitchen job at age 14 was at a Greek restaurant in Southampton, and it inspired my love for foods of the eastern Mediterranean. Today, I’m lucky to be able to obtain the best produce from ‘O ...
