Wines made from Pinot gris grapes of Hampshire
Discover the best wines made with Pinot gris as a single variety or as a blend of Hampshire.
Rich, ample whites with a golden robe, showing aromas of pear, quince, honey, smoke, ginger and spice. Made as structured dry wines (Alsace AOC), off-dry and sumptuous late-harvest sweet (vendange tardive, sélection de grains nobles). Lighter and crisper in Italy as Pinot Grigio (Veneto, Friuli). Also in Germany (Grauburgunder), Hungary (Szürkebarát) and Oregon. A grey mutation of Pinot Noir.
DOC typology (Veneto) born in 1980 — Valpolicella Classico refermented on Amarone or Recioto marc for 15-20 days: increased volume, tannic structure, aromas of candied cherries, plums, dark chocolate, liquorice, smoky and warm spice notes, 14%+ alcohol, 5-10 years cellaring. Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Corvinone as base blend signatures. Qualitative and price bridge between basic Valpolicella and Amarone. Global success.
