Whites with many faces: mineral and taut at Chablis (lemon, green apple, flint), opulent and buttery at Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet (hazelnut, brioche, yellow fruits), tense and chalky in Champagne (Blanc de Blancs). Also vinified sparkling and widely exported (Sonoma, Margaret River, Casablanca). A Burgundian variety, a cross of Pinot Noir × Gouais Blanc, half-sibling of Aligoté.
Umbrian DOC around Lake Trasimeno (Tuscan border), 222 ha on sandy-clay soils. "Gamay del Trasimeno" as the signature red (related to Grenache, brought by Sardinian shepherds in the 19th century): medium-bodied with ripe red fruit, bitter almond, garrigue and a spicy touch, rounded tannins and generous flesh. Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo as complements. Grechetto and Trebbiano as lively whites.
