Kazakhstan is a large transcontinental country: the vast majority of its territory is in Asia, but its western extremities cross into Eastern Europe. Although wine production is very Old, vodka is the main alcoholic drink.
Covering more than 2. 7 million square kilometers (over one million square miles), it is the ninth largest country in the world.
It is also the largest landlocked country, as the Caspian Sea is technically a vast lake rather than a sea (as its name suggests).
Kazakhstan's many neighbours include the Turkish states of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan, which border its southern border, while AzerbaijanLies on the other side of the Caspian Sea. Its northern and eastern borders are dominated by the vastness of Russia and China.
From the Caspian Sea coast in the west to the Altay Mountains in the east, Kazakhstan stretches nearly 3,000 kilometers (1,850 miles), a distance greater than that between London and Moscow.
Countries of this Size are naturally subject to significant climatic and topographical variations within their borders. Kazakhstan is no exception.
Its southwest corner is dominated by the deserts of Central Asia. To the northeast are the cooler, greener plains of western Siberia.
