Discovering the wine region of Crépy

Crépy is a classified growth of the Vin de Savoie appellation, covering an area on the French shores of Lake Geneva, immediately northeast of the city of Geneva. The region's vineyards are largely planted with the Chasselas grape (a favorite of neighboring Switzerland). Savoy Wine Crépy white wines are known to be light and Delicate with nutty and Floral">floral characters. Chasselas must make up at least 80% of Vin de Savoie Varietal wines, and single-varietal examples are common.

However, winemakers are allowed to use a selection of other grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Altesse and the local Gringet grape. Much of Crépy's wine is aged on lees, which contributes to its slightly richer style than the wines of neighboring Marignan. The cru encompasses land in the communes of Douvaine, Ballaison and Loisin, on the southeast facing slopes of the Boissy hills. Crépy was an AOC in its own right from 1948 to 2009, when its producers collectively agreed that their wines were better marketed under the broader title of Vin de Savoie.

None suffered more horribly than the growers of Germany’s Ahr valley, where floodwaters caused by the fou ...

Reduced planting density initiative approved in Champagne

The proposal reduces the mandatory density of planting from 8,000 vines per hectare to approximately 6,000. This would be accomplished by allowing 2.2 metres between rows, essentially removing every other row. The stated purposes include reducing the cost of maintaining the vineyards and therefore the time necessary to maintain them. This has been put forward as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and proponents estimate that such emissions would be 20% lower under the measure, leading som ...
