Discovering the wine region of Wyoming

Wyoming is a state located in the northwestern United States, east of the Rocky Mountains. Covering an area of 253,000 km², Wyoming is the tenth largest state in the United States, but also the least populated. Wyoming's traditional industries are based on mining (coal, diamonds and uranium) and drilling (oil and gas), and its agriculture is centered on vegetables and fruits (rhubarb, cherries and apples). Viticulture is rare, so Wyoming wine is rarely seen outside the state.

Wyoming Lies between latitudes 41°N and 45°N, which puts it on par with some of Europe's most famous wine regions, including Bordeaux and Rioja. However, there are other climatic considerations: Wyoming's Climate is definitely continental, and the nearest Body of water is Lake Superior, located 1,000 km from the state's eastern border. The eastern plains of Wyoming are characterized by hot summers and cold winters, and temperatures in the mountains of western Wyoming are cool even in summer. Only two wineries are located within the state's borders.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot grigio

Pinot grigio is a grey grape variety mutated from Pinot Noir. It has its origins in Burgundy, where it is called pinot-beurot in reference to the colour of the grey robes worn by the monks of the region. Established in Alsace since the 17th century, pinot grigio was called tokay until 2007. It is made up of bunches of small berries that vary in colour from pink to blue-grey. It is particularly well suited to the continental climate because it is resistant to the cold in winter and to spring frosts. This variety also likes dry limestone soils with plenty of sunshine in the summer. pinot grigio is well suited to late harvesting or to the selection of noble grapes, depending on the year and the concentration of sugars in the berries. Pinot grigio wines are distinguished by their aromatic complexity of white fruits, mushrooms, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, etc., and their great finesse. In the Loire Valley, pinot grigio is used in the Coteaux-d'Ancenis appellations. It gives dry or sweet wines with pear and peach aromas.
