The wine region of Nevada County

Northern Sierra Foothills California county (mother AVA 1987, vineyards rarely below 600 m, rocky granitic draining poor soils, Mediterranean climate with large diurnal ranges due to Sierra Nevada alpine influences extending ripening): Syrah, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon as signature king reds — concentrated and elegant profiles with small thick-skinned berries, freshness preserved by cold nights. Mountain boutique wineries, fruit-forward style.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Methuselah

Bottle with a capacity of 6 litres (synonymous with imperial).
