Discovering the wine region of Murcie

Murcia is one of the smallest and least known regions in Spain. Nestled in the extreme Southeast of the country, it is bordered by Andalusia to the west, Castilla-La Mancha to the North, Valencia to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. This small administrative region consists of a single province and an administrative centre that share the same name. As far as wine is concerned, Murcia has three designations of origin.

These are Yecla, in the northern corner, Jumilla, immediately to the south, and Bullas, whose area covers much of the western half of the province. For each DO, and for the region in general, the classic wine is a robust, Fruity red based on Monastrell. In the eastern Part of the region there are also two PGI level areas, Abanilla VT and Campo de Cartagena VT. Wines from outside these DO or VT areas, or that do not comply with DO regulations, may be classified in the Murcia VT regional area.

Discover the grape variety: Bia blanc

An ancient noble grape variety of the Isère Valley and the Rhône Valley department, which was very present before the phylloxera crisis. In the Saint Marcellin region (Isère), it was often associated with Jacquère and Marsanne. Almost unknown in other French regions and other wine-producing countries, it is in the process of disappearing, although it has been registered since 2011 in the Official Catalogue of wine grape varieties, list A1.

The Macallan shines as Sotheby’s largest ever spirits auction smashes target

Behind Rasteau’s renaissance plus 10 ‘new look’ bottles to seek out

Imagine you went to a restaurant and ordered what you thought was a modest Burgundy, but it tasted like a great Bordeaux. Would you be disappointed? Even if what I received was technically a better wine, I think I would be. After all, quality isn’t the overriding criteria when I select a bottle of wine to drink; most of all, I’m thirsting for a specific style. That’s why I’m sometimes wary when hearing about a change of direction in an appellation. Am I still going to find the wine I’m looking f ...
