Simple, lively and crisp whites with a pale golden colour, a light palate with pronounced acidity and discreet aromas of citrus (lemon) and white flowers. Productive and high in acid. Ugni Blanc is mainly grown in Charente and Gascony for the production of Cognac and Armagnac, defining the aromatic identity of French brandies (rancio notes with ageing). The wine region of El Dorado

High-altitude AVA in the Sierra Foothills east of Sacramento (California): signature dominant Zinfandel as king red — full, vivid reds with concentrated dark fruit, spice and fleshy tannins. Also Italian Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and structuring Petite Sirah. Strong Rhône tradition with Viognier, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache. Cooling by altitude rather than fog, sunny ripeness with preserved acidity, eclectic identity of the modern Gold Rush.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Plant

Smells present in certain wines and characteristic of the plant world. Heather, mint or blackcurrant leaf are considered pleasant, while herbaceous notes are considered a defect.
