The wine region of Capay Valley
AVA in northwest Yolo County (2002, 102,400 acres, California) between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Capay Hills, 80 miles northeast of San Francisco: Syrah and Viognier dominate with Rhône character; Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon complement, plus rarer Albariño and Primitivo. Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights, fresh mountain air and Sacramento Delta breezes. Volcanic and rocky soils similar to Lake County, with pebbles and ash.
The wine region of California
Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
