It is said to be a natural interspecific cross between a vitis vinifera and a vitis labrusca, the isabelle variety being a better known example. It was discovered by Gérard Van Tol Boskoop and imported into Germany by Günter Pfeiffer. It can also be found in the Netherlands, Belgium and England, where it is commonly grown in greenhouses. The wine region of Cevennes is located in the region of Pays d'Oc of Vin de Pays of France. It underwent several early revisions in the 1970s, followed by substantial changes in September 2000 and again in 2009, when all existing VDT titles were automatically registered with the European Union as PGI. Producers retain the choice of using either the VDP or PGI titles on their labels, or both - in the form "IGP-Vin de Pays".
