Discover the grape variety: Dabouki

It is most certainly Syrian. By crossing it with the Chasselas, we obtained the Danlas variety, which, by its foliage, somewhat resembles that of its mother the Dabouki. It can be found in Israel, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, etc. In France it is practically endangered, but it is still listed in the Official Catalogue of Table Grape Varieties, list A1.

The wine region of Australie du Sud

SouthAustralia is one of Australia's six states, located (as the name suggests) in the south of the vast island continent. It's the engine room of the Australian wine industry, responsible for about half of the country's total production each year. But there's more to the region than quantity - countless high-quality wines are produced here, most from the region's signature Grape, Shiraz. These include such fine, collectible wines as Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace, Torbreck The Laird and d'Arenberg The Dead Arm.

The extensive Saadé family was one of Syria’s largest landowners: Latakia-based Orthodox Christians whose agricultural wealth developed industrial and trading offshoots in Syria itself, as well as in Lebanon, Cyprus and elsewhere. The family lost all its land and factories in the confiscations and nationalisations which accompanied the short-lived 1958-1961 United Arab Republic, when Syria temporarily unified with Egypt; but it continued its trading and shipping activities. Foundational to the notion of terroir is the story of Burgundy. It is a relationship between Pinot Noir and the monks’ investment in defining place, identifying growing conditions in a complex tapestry of climat and cru that has inspired winemakers worldwide. Countless vintners have sought to replicate its magic elsewhere, planting Pinot around the globe. With it has developed an assertion almost unquestioned – Pinot Noir is the grape most expressive of terroir. But in wines grown outside the Co ...

Californian Pinot Noir pioneer Josh Jensen passes away

Josh Jensen was famed for producing elegant, silky Pinot Noirs at Calera Wine Company on the Central Coast.  Leading wine critic Robert Parker Jr once described Calera – the company that Jensen founded in 1971 – as ‘California’s Romanée-Conti.’ Jensen completed undergraduate studies at Yale, but his love of fine wine blossomed while completing an MA in social anthropology at Oxford University in the UK. He was a key member of the rowing crew at both universities, but he still found time to devel ...

The word of the wine: Pigeage

Operation consisting of a vertical treading to push the cap of marc into the wine, which promotes extraction. Pigeage can be carried out mechanically with jacks that plunge into the vat. Traditionally, it is the men who go down into the vats and push the cap by trampling it.
