Wineries and vineyards like the Domaine Roc d'Anglade or the Domaine Mas des Bressades produce mainly wines red, white and pink. The most planted grape varieties in the region of Gard are Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Mourvèdre, they are then used in wines in blends or as a single variety. On the nose of Gard often reveals types of flavors of cream, green apple or honeysuckle and sometimes also flavors of nutmeg, cheese or orange.

The wine region of Vin de Pays

Vin de Pays (VDP), the French national equivalent of PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) at the European level, is a quality category of French wines, positioned between Vin de Table (VDT) and Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). This layer of the French appellation system was initially introduced in September 1968 by the INAO, the official appellation authority. It underwent several early revisions in the 1970s, followed by substantial changes in September 2000 and again in 2009, when all existing VDT titles were automatically registered with the European Union as PGI. Producers retain the choice of using either the VDP or PGI titles on their labels, or both - in the form "IGP-Vin de Pays".

Belgium destroys Miller High Life cans bearing ‘Champagne of Beers’ slogan

Champagne is a protected denomination of origin (PDO) in the EU, just like Parmigiano Reggiano, Kalamata olive oil from Greece and paprika from Murcia in Spain. Belgian officials determined that Miller High Life’s century-old motto represents an infringement of the PDO, and they ruled that the cans were therefore illicit goods. Workers at a plant in Ypres destroyed the batch, sending out a clear warning to the world that the Champagne brand is not to be messed with. ‘The Comité Champagne helps t ...

Mouton Rothschild 2022 release likely to ‘sell out’

Mouton Rothschild became the second first growth to release its 2022 vintage en primeur this morning (20 June), emerging at €516 per bottle ex-négociant in Bordeaux, up nearly 23% on the 2021 vintage release last year, said Liv-ex, a global marketplace for the trade. Mouton Rothschild 2022 was offered at £6,216 per case (12x75cl in bond) in the UK. Liv-ex data showed this was broadly level with the current price of the 2018 vintage, and slightly below the lauded 2016 vintage. Decanter’s Georgie ...

A perfect storm: Nutri-Score, alcohol and health

The situation has been developing for a long time. But the potentially explosive elements are growing in intensity and coming together as if by some invisible magnetic force. In 2011, Regulation No. 1169 (which amended earlier regulations going back to 2006) was adopted in European Parliament calling for a system to provide food nutrition information to consumers. Shortly thereafter, the French Ministry of Health instructed Santé Publique France, the national public health agency, to create a co ...

The word of the wine: Terroir

Strictly speaking, the notion of terroir corresponds to the geological characteristics of a vineyard. However, when we talk about terroir, we take into account the soil, the climate (even the microclimate), the flora, the fauna, and the human factor that characterizes the practices that make up the art of the craft.
