An interspecific cross between merzling and rondo obtained in 1975 by Norbert Becker of the Freiburg Research Institute in Germany. Bordeaux Sciences Agro has since noted a loss of efficiency on mildew due to a bypass. It can be found in Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Italy, England, etc. It is not very widespread today and is almost unknown in France. It should not be confused with another variety of the same name, which comes from a Pinot Blanc seedling, also obtained in Germany by Johann Philipp Bronner.

I got to know his family, and he mine; we learned and explored together. His father Rolf ran the business – effectively; though he seemed more interested in his collections of corkscrews, antique firearms and American cars than in wine. Dirk’s flat was full of old typewriters. Ceramic frogs covered every av ...

Navigating the flames: British Columbia wineries’ response to the growing wildfire threat

As the summer season comes to a close and many wineries prepare for harvest, more than 400 active wildfires continue to burn in British Columbia, a handful of which the BC Wildfire Service designates ‘a potential threat to public safety’ in major cities, small towns and the vineyards in between. Sparked on 15th August, the season’s most destructive wildfire – the McDougall Creek Fire – had the province’s wine industry on its knees. Spreading over 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres), it initially thre ...
