The wine region of Sierra Pelona Valley

AVA of the Sierra Pelona Mountains, northwest of Los Angeles County (2010, between Santa Clarita and Palmdale at 900 m, warm-dry continental climate with strong diurnal swings extending ripening, 56 km from Pacific and 32 km from Mojave desert): Syrah, Zinfandel and Tempranillo as red kings — full-bodied and concentrated with ripe fruits and spices, balanced by altitude freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec as complements; Chardonnay and Viognier as whites.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Persistence
