Discovering the wine region of Münster-Sarmsheim

Münster-Sarmsheim is a Village on the banks of the Nahe river, just a Short distance South of the river's confluence with the Rhine river. Like many of its neighbors, Münster-Sarmsheim's most prized wines are made from the Riesling grape in a variety of different styles. The village Lies below the Münster forest and is within walking distance of the important wine town of Bingen. Much of the local farmland was converted to Vineyards during the 20th Century.

There are three vineyards classified as Grosse Lage in this area – Langenberg, Dautenpflänzer and Pittersberg. Dautenpflänze is a small parcel within the larger Kapellenberg vineyard, planted on soils of loess-clay and quartzite. It is favorably located at the foothills of the Münster forest with a southeast aspect. This provides the Riesling vines with Ample sunlight hours and protection from the cold westerly winds, allowing for a Long, even ripening period.

The 9 hectare (23 ac) Münsterer Pittersberg vineyard is on the western outskirts of the village. Its close proximity to the river offers a warm, dry environment that is accentuated by the steep south-facing aspect. Soils are slate and Devonian schist. Two of Münster-Sarmsheim's most notable local wineries are Weingut Göttelmann and Weingut Kruger-Rumpf.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot blanc

Pinot Blanc is a grape variety that originated in Burgundy, mutated from Pinot Gris. Today, it is grown in Alsace where it is called klevner when blended with auxerrois. The continental climate, with its cold winters and hot summers, is particularly suited to pinot blanc. It is resistant to frost in winter and in summer, the roots draw the minerals it needs from the warm soil. Its bunches are made up of small berries with thick skins and melting pulp that produce fruity, spicy wines, balanced between acidity and alcohol. pinot blanc is also used for crémants and sparkling wines. Pinot Blanc is also used for Crémant and sparkling wines. It is widely grown in Italy, where it covers almost 7,000 hectares, and is also found in Germany, Austria, Canada and South Africa.

Andrew Jefford: ‘A wine’s visual cues shout, stamp, whistle and roar’

Disconcerting: I couldn’t forget this bottle for days afterwards. Still can’t. Back in August, wine critic Lin Liu MW (together with her partner Philippe Lejeune of Château de Chambert in Cahors) came to dinner, en route to a short holiday in Provence. One of the bottles Lin brought for us to try together was the 2018 Les Rocheuses, Parcelles No 5 et 6, from Château Le Rey in Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. It came in a slope-shouldered bottle, not a classic Bordeaux bottle. We tried it with some R ...
