Rich, ample whites with a golden robe, showing aromas of pear, quince, honey, smoke, ginger and spice. Made as structured dry wines (Alsace AOC), off-dry and sumptuous late-harvest sweet (vendange tardive, sélection de grains nobles). Lighter and crisper in Italy as Pinot Grigio (Veneto, Friuli). Also in Germany (Grauburgunder), Hungary (Szürkebarát) and Oregon. A grey mutation of Pinot Noir.
Tuscan DOC (Arezzo, Siena) in the fertile eponymous valley between Cortona and Montepulciano. Sangiovese (≥50%) as signature red — balanced with lively notes of cherry, plum, violet, undergrowth and a spiced-tobacco touch, firm tannins and racy acidity. Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah as complements. Trebbiano Toscano as lively white with flowers, green apple and citrus; Malvasia, Grechetto and Chardonnay in complement.
