Pinot Blanc is a grape variety that originated in Burgundy, mutated from Pinot Gris. Today, it is grown in Alsace where it is called klevner when blended with auxerrois. The continental climate, with its cold winters and hot summers, is particularly suited to pinot blanc. It is resistant to frost in winter and in summer, the roots draw the minerals it needs from the warm soil. Its bunches are made up of small berries with thick skins and melting pulp that produce fruity, spicy wines, balanced between acidity and alcohol. pinot blanc is also used for crémants and sparkling wines. Franche-Comté is the regional PGI title covering both still and Sparkling wines from a large mountainous region in eastern France. The region is made up of the departments of Haute-Saône, Doubs and Jura, the latter of which is home to the Jura wine region and many appellations d'origine contrôlée (AOC) such as Arbois. The PGI offers more freedom to the region's winemakers, both geographically and in terms of winemaking. The Franche-Comté region - one of France's 27 official regions - borders Switzerland.

A rare bottle of Gordon & MacPhail’s Glen Grant 72-year-old whisky has broken its own previous auction world record in a sale at Bonham’s Hong Kong on 20 May.
