Whites with many faces: mineral and taut at Chablis (lemon, green apple, flint), opulent and buttery at Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet (hazelnut, brioche, yellow fruits), tense and chalky in Champagne (Blanc de Blancs). Also vinified sparkling and widely exported (Sonoma, Margaret River, Casablanca). A Burgundian variety, a cross of Pinot Noir × Gouais Blanc, half-sibling of Aligoté.

Sub-region of South African Klein Karoo (Western Cape, high plateaus around Ladismith at the foot of the Swartberg mountains, well-drained soils), semi-arid climate with hot summers and cool altitude nights. Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional and Muscat à Petits Grains as signature solar, Portuguese-style fortified reds with intense candied black fruits, plum, dates, spices, cocoa and a refined desert-balsamic note. Chenin Blanc and Shiraz as dry complements. Kingdom of fortifieds.
