The Republic of NorthMacedonia">Macedonia is a country located in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. It is quite distinct from modern Greek Macedonia, with which it shares a border of over 160 kilometres (100 miles). The wine industry is dominated by red wines. Production is centered on two indigenous Grape varieties (Vranac and Kratosija), as well as a few international varieties such as the ubiquitous Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The main wine-producing regions are Pcinja-Osogovo in the north, Pelagonija-Polog in the south and Povardarie. The republic as a whole has a stable area of 23,000 hectares (56,850 acres) of vineyards and a slightly larger coverage of vines harvested for table grapes. Although it is a landlocked country (it is separated from the Adriatic Sea by Albania and from the Aegean Sea by Greece), the republic experiences continental and Mediterranean influences on its Climate. Its northeastern corner is separated from the nearest coast by 200 km (125 miles), while Lake Doiran, at its southeastern end, is only 55 km (35 miles) from the Greek coastal city of Thessaloniki, on the Gulf of Thessaloniki.

Along the Albanian border, in the southwest corner of the republic, several large lakes temper the climate. The shelter provided by the local topography combines with other geological factors to create particularly productive agricultural land, especially around the lake towns of Struga and Resen. Grapes play an important role in the local economy and agriculture. Lake Prespa, which Northern Macedonia shares with Greece and Albania, is the highest tectonic lake in Europe.

Andrew Jefford: ‘Can wine help us make sense of tragedy?’

The dark days began when I learned from a visiting Canadian friend about the death of one of the kindest, most gentle and most skilful Pinot winemakers I’ve known, Paul Pender of Tawse Winery. He died in a senseless and tragic act of violence on the evening of 3 February, outside his Lake Erie cottage. A stranger, subsequently charged with his murder, had (it seems) knocked on his door, asking for help. Paul’s sudden, untimely loss has left his family, and the broader Canadian wine community, di ...

Willamette Valley grape crop is dealt a frosty blow

On 11 April, 2022, cold temperatures, snow and frost arrived in the Willamette Valley. The pre-dawn hours of 15 April were particularly devastating, with numerous vineyards registering overnight lows of minus three to zero degrees Celsius. Gregory Jones, a research climatologist and CEO of Abacela Winery in Roseburg, Oregon, refers to the event as ‘February in April’ in his weather and climate newsletter. The frost’s timing was disastrous. Thanks to a warmer, drier Oregon winter, Chardonnay and ...

Bordeaux 2022: En primeur campaign branded ‘another missed opportunity’

The global wine marketplace revealed that the average price of en primeur wines increased by 20.8% compared to 2021. Liv-ex members had only anticipated a 7.7% increase when they were polled in May, so the price hikes significantly exceeded expectations. Some would argue that inflation has often been close to 10% in much of the developed world over the past year, and the 2022 vintage received rave reviews from critics, so perhaps the sharp increase was to be expected. Yet sales of the 2022 vinta ...
