Discovering the wine region of Maldonado

Maldonado is an emerging wine region in the southeast of Uruguay, on the Atlantic Ocean, producing an array of red and white wines. As elsewhere in the country, the Tannat grape variety is most common. Other key red varieties are Merlot, Malbec and the Cabernets (Sauvignon and Franc). Leading white grapes in the region are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Riesling.

The maritime influence is unsurprisingly marked here. Temperatures are mild with cool breezes moderating the summer heat. The region, which Lies roughly 120km (75 miles) east of the capital Montevideo, has higher altitudes and greater geological diversity than other parts of the country. There are many areas of Old, worn, rocky strata which provide free draining Vineyards high in minerals.
