Deeply coloured and structured reds with a deep ruby robe, firm to powerful tannins and a dense palate, with signature aromas of black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), plum, spices and balsamic notes. Fine ageing potential as a tannic red. Grown mainly in the South-West for IGPs, it offers excellent potential for red wines with ageing ability. The wine region of Bottelary

Ward of Stellenbosch (Western Cape, South Africa) — one of eight official wards: old bush-vine Chenin Blanc as signature, powerful Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on warm sites. Rich clay soils with excellent water retention contrasting with the mountain soils of the rest of Stellenbosch — signature geological diversity. Hot, dry climate tempered by south-east breezes from False Bay. Structure and concentration as hallmarks.

The wine region of Western Cape

Cradle of South African wine. Signature Chenin Blanc (Steen, 20%) in ample, fresh whites with notes of quince, yellow apple, honey and acacia flower, from crisp dry to sweet. Sharp, iodised Sauvignon Blanc (Walker Bay, Constantia), balanced Chardonnay. Reds: emblematic Pinotage with roasted aromas (coffee, plum, smoke), firm Cabernet Sauvignon, spicy Syrah.
