Discovering the wine region of Émilie-Romagne

Romagna/emilia">Emilia-Romagna is a Rich and fertile region in Northern Italy, and one of the country's most prolific wine-producing regions, with over 58,000 hectares (143,320 acres) of vines in 2010. It is 240 kilometers (150 miles) wide and stretches across almost the entire northern Italian peninsula, sandwiched between Tuscany to the South, Lombardy and Veneto to the north and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Nine miles of Liguria is all that separates Emilia-Romagna from the Ligurian Sea, and its uniqueness as the only Italian region with both an east and west coast. Emilia-Romagna's wine-growing heritage dates back to the seventh century BC, making it one of the oldest wine-growing regions in Italy.

Vines were introduced here by the Etruscans and then adopted by the Romans, who used the Via Aemilia (after which the region is named) to transport wine between towns. The Grape varieties used here for many centuries were of the Vitis labrusca species rather than the Vitis vinifera used worldwide today. The famous Lambrusco varieties of Emilia Romagna are derived from the Vitis labrusca species. Today, about 15 percent of the wine produced in Emilia-Romagna comes from the region's 20 or so DOCs, and only a tiny fraction from its two DOCGs (Albana di Romagna and Colli Bolognesi Classico Pignoletto).

Discover the grape variety: Regent

A complex interspecific cross between the diana (sylvaner x Müller-Thurgau) and the chambourcin obtained in Germany in 1967 by Gerhardt Alleweldt. It can be found in Quebec (Canada), Belgium and Switzerland, but is little known in France. It should be noted that Regent, a monogenic variety, which is nevertheless resistant to certain cryptogamic diseases, was "bypassed" in 2010 by a less resistant strain of mildew, which was also the case for bianca.

Chile harvest report 2022: ‘a challenging year in terms of climate’

Just over 6,400km in length, Chile is a country with a fascinating range of terroirs. This is fully reflected in the diversity of its wines. Heavily influenced by air currents from the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes to the east, all of Chile’s wine producing valleys have their own microclimates, as well as distinct complex soil composition. This variety means that individual vineyards experienced the harvest conditions of 2022 in different ways. It was a year that saw the continuation o ...

Best Cognacs for Christmas 2021

If a good Cognac isn’t just for Christmas, it isn’t only for after-dinner sipping either. A top-quality VS or VSOP is also an excellent base for a refreshing aperitif or a palate-sharpening cocktail. You can keep it simple with ice and tonic, dial up the flavour with ginger ale – or move into more sophisticated territory by mixing a zesty Sidecar or twisted Manhattan. Hell, if you’re feeling flush, use an XO to create hedonistically rich and decadent Vieux Carré. Whether you’re buying for a love ...

The word of the wine: Reims Mountain

Between Épernay and Reims, a large limestone massif with varied soils and exposure where pinot noir reigns supreme. Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzenay, Verzy, etc., are equivalent to the Burgundian Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée. There are also great Chardonnays, which are rarer (Mailly, Marmery, Trépail, Villers).
